The Association of Midland Goldfish Keepers
The society comprises dedicated goldfish keepers committed to the care and breeding of goldfish
A good oranda, conforming to the standard, is very rare; the standard formerly called for a forked tail but has been revised to the square-edged tail of the moor and the veiltail. Far Eastern imports have a deeply-forked, thin-lobed tail and frequently have excellent hood development, self-coloured reds having good colour depth. Retaining good colouration…
The veiltail is one of the hardest fancy goldfish to breed true to type, and it is very difficult to produce good quality specimens conforming to the standard in all respects. However, it is one of the most graceful and ornamental fish and is deservedly popular amongst breeders. The veiltail was probably first produced in America…

Amongst the twintails, the fantail is relatively easy to breed. The finnage is important, and the tail must have the right kind of forking. Calico fish should have a blue background with patches of violet, red, orange, yellow and brown, spotted with black.(in a pleasing pattern similar on both sides).

The colour and overall body shape are the first characters to improve as a result of selective breeding, and the large tail is the hardest character to achieve. It is not necessarily the rule that good fish produce good young, which can be a puzzle, and improved characters, if not carefully maintained, will deteriorate –…
A very large proportion of common goldfish breed true to type, which makes this fish good for beginners, but it is a difficult fish for showing because it is such a relatively simple fish (which makes it difficult to develop a strain that stands out above the ordinary); the intensity of the colour is…
